As part of our effort to provide training and technical assistance (TTA) services to achieve safer communities nationwide, BJA NTTAC is heavily focused on supporting promising and innovative efforts to support communities in reducing violent crime. This resource page features trainings, technical assistance (TA) opportunities, national initiatives, publications, and other materials that may be beneficial to you in your work to reduce violent crime. The list is not all-encompassing, but rather features those resources that BJA NTTAC believes will help maximize positive outcomes within your community. Additional resources will continue to be added to this page. You are also encouraged to visit the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) National Public Safety Partnership (PSP) site for additional resources to help address violent crime or other justice-related issues within your community.

The following is a list of trainings, TA opportunities, national initiatives, publications, and other resources that you and/or your organization may find useful to addressing violent crime challenges:

Trainings:

  • Blue Courage – Innovative training on integrity, courage, and character for law enforcement officers of all ranks.

  • Crime Analysis for Chief Executives – A two-day workshop that seeks to assist top commanders in identifying how to support actionable analysis within their own departments and use that analysis to drive operations.

  • Foundations of Intelligence Analysis (FIAT) – Training for law enforcement that addresses the critical need for well-trained intelligence analysts to interpret growing amounts of information available today.

  • Social Network Analysis (SNA) – Training to provide attendees with a high-level overview of SNA, as well as the benefits and challenges to its application in a law enforcement context; SNA is a proven methodology to garner insights about criminal networks beyond data collected in traditional records management systems.

  • Tact, Tactics, and Trust (T3™) - Evidence-based police training system that integrates social interaction, officer safety, and community policing skills into a single, holistic program. 

  • VALOR – Comprehensive training effort that provides all levels of law enforcement with tools to help prevent violence against law enforcement officers and enhance officer, safety, wellness, and resiliency.

Technical Assistance:

BJA NTTAC also offers TA services to address your violent crime needs – delivering onsite assistance from subject matter experts, peer-to-peer engagement, assessments, and strategic planning on a wide range of topics such as homicides assessments, CompStat, GunStat, and crime analysis. See below for examples of TA services:

  • Crime Analysis on Demand (CAoD) - TTA to enhance justice agency capabilities to analyze and use data to make informed decisions, respond effectively, and prevent crime.

  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) - TTA to implement strategies to help communities assess their needs as they relate to environmental conditions that may be leading to crime incidents and putting citizens at risk.

National Initiatives and Organizations:

  • Destination Zero – National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) initiative to improve the safety and wellness of law enforcement officers.

  • National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention – Presidential initiative to establish a national forum for conversation around youth and gang violence issues.

  • National Gang Center – Programming that aims to reduce gang-related crime and violence through national leadership; provision of information for policymakers and researchers; and delivery of research, training, and technical assistance to practitioners nationwide.

  • Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) – A nationwide initiative to reduce gun and gang crime in the United States.

  • Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) – Program to promote regional information-sharing among justice agencies to support the investigation and prevention of criminal activity.

  • Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) - Funding through a competitive grant program to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions’ approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAK).

  • Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) – Consortium of nationwide law enforcement agencies testing new and innovative solutions to address serious crime issues.

  • National Public Safety Partnership (PSP) – DOJ-wide program that enables cities to consult with and receive coordinated TTA and an array of resources from DOJ to enhance local violence reduction strategies.
